Dragon Fruits Brings Smile to Farmers

Dragon fruit cultivation in India is a profitable business that can be a good source of income for farmers. Dragon fruit is a herbaceous perennial climbing cactus. It is a good income-generating fruit. The crop provides fast return with income production in the fi rst year after planting and full production is attained in 3-4 years. Keeping in mind the profit motive, Kadomtola GP, under the Mahamaya Development Block of Dhubri District, introduced an IBS scheme of Dragon fruit planted in the land of Ayubal Mojid at village Beltari. Ayubal Mojid is a BPL holder beneficiary. He has a land of 0.5 Bigha for cultivation. In the Gram Sobha, the Panchayat decided to take up the scheme of Dragon fruit plantation in the land of Ayubal Mojid under MGNREGA for the 2022-23. Th e technical team of the Gaon Panchayat, concerned PRIs and the local VMC Committee were actively involved in the scheme. The plants were purchased from a local Nursery. Th e benefi ciary planted the dragon fruit with a technical method, applying controlled water in the land to help grow crops. The land was developed to retain rainwater. The Block Development Officer and the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Mahamaya Development Block strictly monitored the whole progress of the Scheme.

The Dragon fruit plantation under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA has provided significant employment opportunities for beneficiaries, contributing to the economic growth of the country as well as good earnings for them.

   Ayubal Mojid is now a busy farmer with an average monthly income Rs.8000. With this income, he can not only support his family but ensure a steady, sustainable livelihood. Overall, it has proved to be a great success for the benefi ciary and implementing agency as well.
